I have been busy--over my head, in fact. A few days ago, though, I took our daughter over to the local Salvation Army second-hand store on Happy hour night. Clothing 50% off, that is.

Took the camera, too, and found this forlorn Remington typewriter for sale.

A steadily decreasing part of me wants to take this thing home and fix it up and use it. And my good sense tells me it'll gather dust, no matter what its state.

Goodbye, Remington. You and your mechanical siblings gave me purpose, perhaps saved my life.

Oh, we've got one of those kind of typewriters stored away somewhere, packrats that we are!

Better off leaving those chapters closed, Peter. It's just stuff to drag on the journey...

My personal fondness is for the MagCard Selectric II machines, with the first magnetically-readable memory. My first word-processor! I amazed my friends, because there was no whiteout anywhere on my papers! (They had no idea how many times I'd had to print those pages in order to get 'em all right, of course...)

I miss the rapid-fire sounds of the Selectric ball, and the feel of the Selectric keyboard. But I wouldn't give up a second of the quasi-WYSIWYG publishing I've come to know, either - not ever. I was recently talking with a fellow who used to print using a 4 color press, and we reminisced about laying out copy with a product called PressType or LetraSet (rub on typeset-style letters). I don't miss having to do that, either...

Life, and technology, has moved on, and I'm glad that's a place that I'm "from," not "in."
