On this holiday weekend...

Happy Canada Day. Both Canada and the US will be celebrating foundational holidays this weekend, and both have foundational shadows: the US rebellion was begun by greedy land speculators (including George Washington), who wanted Indian lands west of the then-demarcated boundaries of the 13 colonies. Great Britain was intent on honouring treaties with its native allies, and refused to allow westward expansion. The rest, as we know, is history.

Canada feared US expansion west and northward in the mid-1800s. When the Metis of what is now Manitoba and then Saskatchewan were being courted by American agents to let their lands become part of the expanding America, Canadian troops sent westward to "quell the rebellion" were in fact establishing Canadian sovereignty over aboriginal lands. The sacrificial goat in this dispute was Louis Riel.

For me, the foundational celebrations are always more of a hope than a recognition of achievement. We hope that we work toward being a better country, a more open country, a just country. May the fireworks and celebrations empower us to hope and work some more toward those goals.

In the meantime, this morning, I found this article in the Toronto Star, and because it is so important, I am puttig up a link to the article here. It is sobering reading for both Canadian and American alike on this holiday weekend:

It is a happy one nonetheless--I hold out the hope, as long as there people like Stephen lewis in the world.

Excellent articles, Peter. I agree that Stphen Lewis is an important indiviadul in this world, we need more like him, and more to heed his words.

We can be proud of Canada for many things, but there's still a lot of improvement needed, and watching out for any potential losses of what is precious here.

Happy Canada Day! I hope you don't mind that I've linked to this article of yours in my own Canada Day post.

Actually, I'm pleased, Marja-Leena, although because of the copyright issue, I am thinking of removing this post in a day or two.
