Antidote to "Clone Town"--winning some, and losing some

I don't usually get a chance to listen to CBC Radio, but Friday AM, I caught The Current. Fine show, hosted this time by former Winnipeg mayor Glen Murray. Part of the show was about the "Clone Town" phenomenon, in which retail outlet "clones" are making anywhere in the world look like anywhere else.

Think of Wal Mart, Gap, Old Navy, etc. It comforts me not at all that I could find a Gap store in Shanghai or Moscow, same as here. Our little hinterland city is also beseiged by clone stores, and the people are jumping at it. So, we spend a dollar at these places and 75 cents of it leaves the city. This is sensible economics? Oh well...

But I got to thinking about what we have that other cities don't--and conversely, what you in your places have that we don't.

We have Great Northwest Coffee--fair trade, roasted locally every other day, coffee. One outlet: that's it. Northern Woman's Bookstore: our last indie bookstore, with a terrific selection of titles, minority authors and themes--and a staff of whom 2/3 are volunteers! Folino's, the magazine store out of the 1950s with over 2000 (!) titles to choose from. Renco market--locally owned and operated. No chain. The Attic--you wonder if the building is going to collapse as you enter it, but it's a fun retro junk store. The Painted Turtle Art Shop, a visual feast.

I felt so energized thinking about this, that I drove over to GNW and got Joyce and I the biggest coffee I could, took it home and split it with her. That afternoon, I resolved to shop at Renco (not A & P), and did so. It's a great lttle place, with loads of Portuguese and Greek foodstuffs (anyone for pickled aubergines?) as well as the same things you'll find at many stores, but then my heart sank a little.

You see, every food store is dependent on distributors or suppliers. Renco's main distributor is {gulp} Safeway. Hard to get away from the monster, isn't it?

Anyway, what one-shot places do you have that we don't? Let's celebrate 'em!

I've had similar thoughts, and would have a hard time finding fully local stores. Even then, like you say, the suppliers are usually American. Even the coffee at the local little shop - they buy the beans from a US company and you can't get them any other way! (I learned this recently from someone who's son owns a coffee place in Victoria.) Free trade??

Actually, coffee, as long as to fair-traded, doesn't represent a problem to me. My problem is with "clone" outlets like Starbucks (lousy coffee, btw), which drive local shops out of business because of economies of scale. The stuff is all sent in roasted, ground (if necessary) and prepackaged. No local money or labour involved except minimum-wage point-of-sale.

I would add, that if it's locally=produced, buy it. At least our A & P buys locally produced potatoes. Safeway "imports" them from southern Ontario (2500 km and a lot of diesel fuel).
