The Words, is it?
A day or two ago, I took the Irish poetry book in to show my co-worker what her Chapter's gift card had got for me as a Christmas present.
And got a little surprise.
Most of my co-workers are Ojibway (plus one Odawa), either by one or both parents. Trish is one of this group. She looked at the book closely, beyond a "that's nice" glance: turns out her dad's parents came from Ireland, though she couldn't say where, and this part of her heritage struck a spark off the book.
She leafed through, saw the Irish Gaelic of Mick Lally's reading, saw the names and the often luminous lines. And, from her words and her expression, was thinking about it all.
Both Irish and Ojibway traditional cultures valued the power of the spoken word. Both revered those who could spin a beautiful, or wrenching tale, who could hold people spellbound in magical oratory. While the Irish have managed to maintain that tradition, the Ojibway have lost so much of it, that many are not even aware of that part of their heritage.
Not to make too much of the moment, but maybe the two traditions smiled at one another in that room that morning.
